Approach to Therapy
My full name is Loretta Laurin, but you can call me Lo.I specialize in relationships, trauma, and personal growth. I support clients with relationship challenges (including queer and open relationships), interpersonal and family conflict, trauma-related symptoms (including physical, sexual, racial, childhood, and intergenerational trauma), grief & loss, chronic pain, self-esteem & self-criticism, anxiety, burnout, addictions/substance-use issues, explorations of identity (including gender and culture), psychedelic integration, and life & career transitions/planning.My approach is influenced by somatics, social justice, and attachment theory. Somatic therapy incorporates the wisdom of the body into the healing process. With a background in teaching movement for over 15 years, I understand that the mind and body are intricately connected. As a queer and multiracial person with experiences of chronic pain, I also understand the importance of culturally-sensitive and context-aware counselling. A social justice lens in therapy considers your social and cultural environment and supports personal empowerment and collective liberation. Finally, attachment theory looks at how childhood relationship patterns affect how we react to things today, and provides the opportunity to heal through new experiences of more secure (safe and loving) relational patterns.Overall, I aim to provide you with a compassionate space where you can feel the safety and support needed to take the next steps along your healing journey, and to thrive in your life and relationships.
A Bit About Me Outside of Therapy
I was born and raised in the Vancouver, BC area on the traditional lands of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. My mother is a Chinese immigrant, and my late father was Quebecois (French-Canadian). I love dancing and outdoor adventures, and I am passionate about facilitating meaningful experiences for people.
Individual Therapy
I believe strongly in your innate capacity to heal and grow, and will work with you to reconnect you to this inner wisdom. While the space I hold is compassionate, collaborative, and non-judgemental, I can also provide guidance and perspective to support your growth when appropriate.I tailor my approach to each client, recognizing that different tools are helpful for different people. I am trained in Internal Family Systems (IFS). I find IFS to be a very powerful method of getting in touch with your creativity, curiosity, self-compassion, and self-understanding. It allows us to identify inner parts that may be in conflict or out of balance - for example, the critic, perfectionist, or caretaker. We can then build better relationships with these parts and the underlying wounds that brought them out of balance. In my wide toolbox, I also draw upon Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), Somatic Experiencing (SE), Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SP), Solutions-Focused Therapy, Sandtray Therapy, Satir, Gestalt, and Person-Centered Therapy. I am also a certified Life Coach.
Couples / Relationship Therapy
In couples/relationship therapy, we can explore the root causes of harmful patterns of behaviour and communication, while developing more effective relationship skills and fostering connection and intimacy. I have personal experiences in queer/gay, straight, monogamous, polyamorous/open/swinger, kink, religious, and atheist relationships. I understand every relationship to be unique and will take the time to learn and listen to what your personal relationship challenges, goals, and aspirations are. I facilitate the process of clearly articulating your relationship needs, hearing and understanding your partner(s), untangling and confronting problematic behaviours in a loving way, and learning/practicing specific skills that support healthy and lasting relationships.I work primarily with Relational Life Therapy (RLT), which is a compassionate and trauma-informed approach that is not afraid to address power dynamics within relationships. I am also influenced by Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT) and the Gottman Method.
